Rajwada is located inside the Maheshwar Fort in Maheshwar. The fort is snuggled on the bank of the Narmada River. This massive fort boasts of stupendous walls that are dated back to antiquity. There is no clear evidence of the construction. It is believed that the fort was constructed during the reign of Ahilya Bai Holkar. She was the daughter-in-law of the Malhar Rao Holkar, the founder of the Hindu Maratha dynasty of Holkar who ruled central India from Indore. Rajwada was a residence of the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar and where she used to pray.
