Munnar was an intensely forested area until 1790 when it was found by the Duke of Wellington. In 1870, Travancore's ruler allowed 588 sq. km of land on rent to J.D. Munro, a Scottish tea grower and a legal counselor. The main sapling of tea was planted at Parvathi, which is currently known as Sevenmallay Estate.
