The beautiful town of Paro is full of legends, history and events, which marks the beginning of great cultural heritage of the country. According to legends, Guru Rimpoche came on the back of a tigress to Paro in 761 AD. The Taktsang Lhakhang or Tiger’s Nest near Paro, one of the most religious sites in Bhutan, was established by Guru Rimpoche. The religious leaders of Paro controlled Western Bhutan for quite a long time and Nyingmapa School established by Guru Rimpoche gave great monks and monarchs. In 1616, Sgabdrung Ngwang Namgyal arrived in Bhutan and established the dual system of governance that lasted till the beginning of last century.
