Trivandrum is built on seven hills and it is located nearby the southern tip of mainland India. The city is bounded by the Laccadive Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other side.
Padmanabhaswamy temple is a must-see place in all the Trivandrum sightseeing packages. The Padmanabhaswamy temple was built in the 8th century. It is the world’s richest temple with a staggering $22 billion worth of gold jewels and statues being uncovered from this temple in 2011. One of the pious 108 Divya desams or Vishnu temples in India, the Padmanabhaswamy temple is a masterpiece of Kerala and Dravidian styles of architecture. Lord Vishnu is the main deity of the temple who is seen on Anantha the serpent. The importance of the temple can be ascertained from the fact that the city of Thiruvananthapuram gets its name from this temple, the word Thiruvananthapuram means – the land of Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswamy.
The next famous tourist destination of Trivandrum is Kovalam beach whichis a half-an-hour drive from Thiruvananthapuram. Any good Trivandrum package will consist of the Kovalam beach. The beach seems to be hidden between lush green coconut trees and the high Rocky Mountains, alluring the traveler to discover its serene beauty. Kovalam Beach is dotted with tall lighthouses and pristine sands. The Napier Museum is a Natural History Museum located near Zoological Park in the heart of the city. The museum contains a lot of artifacts like bronze idols, ancient ornaments, ivory carvings, and a temple chariot. There is a Japanese shadow leather which is used for showing the epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana, this is an especially impressive piece in the museum. Named after the first Governor-general of Madras John Napier, the museum is an apt depiction of the cultural heritage of Kerala.
Ponmudi or the golden peak is a beautiful hill station which is situated at an about 1.5-hour drive from Trivandrum. The best way to explore Ponmudi is on foot. Cleanse your lungs with the fresh mountain air as you calm your mind and soothe your eyes on this lush green paradise. Even if you are not ready for a trek on the mountain, you could still have a piece of the adventure by taking a long drive from Trivandrum to Ponmudi. On the way, the mighty Kallar River will be there for the company.
