Periyar National Park is considered a protected area for elephants and tigers. The heart of the sanctuary is adorned with a beautiful artificial lake surrounded by scenic mountains and dense forests. The national park is nestled amidst the fascinating Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the Western Ghats. Periyar National Park is home to rare endemic and endangered flora and fauna. This sanctuary was brought under the Project Tiger Mission in 1978 and made the 10th Tiger Reserve in India in 1982. It was also declared as an Elephant Reserve when the Project Elephant mission was launched in 1991. The spectacular stretch of greenery gets its name from the river Periyar which has its origin deep inside the wildlife park. Famous for its rustic and refreshing climate Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady houses the most exquisite flora and fauna in the country. Periyar National Park tour has become very popular and it attracts thousands of tourists every year to experience the thrilling safari rides, rafting, trekking and other activities inside the park.
The Mullaiperiyar Dam was built in 1895 and this led to the formation of Periyar lake reserve. The lake helped the region to become very fertile and it attracted many species of animals and birds. Maharaja of Travancore declared this area as a private game reserve and it was named as Nellikkampatty Game Reserve. After the Independence of India, this sanctuary was declared as a wildlife reserve area in 1950. Two rivers Pampa and Periyar run through the park which helps the flora and fauna to thrive. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 925 sq. km and the core zone of 350 sq. km is declared as Periyar National Park. This park is the habitat of the amazing Nilgiri Tahr which is one of the most beautiful species found here. Visitors can spot Bengal tigers, Indian elephants, Langur, Gaur, Sambhar, Sloth bear and birds like Nilgiri wood pigeon, Malabar grey hornbill, and black-necked stork.
Safari is the best way for tourists to explore the national park. Elephant safari, jeep safari and boat cruise on Periyar Lake are available to explore the flora and fauna of this park. The boat cruise is the most opted one by all tourists as it is the best way to spot wild animals like elephants, bison, deers and wild boars. The boat cruise will not be available throughout the year as boating is stopped temporarily during heavy rains. Elephant safari is common among tourists with children and it is easier to cover trails that are hard to reach by jeep. Jeep safari is for small groups and individuals and it is preferred by photography lovers as it is the best way to sight ferocious animals. The jeep safari will take you through hills, valleys, and sprawling grasslands. Walking tours with guides are also available but it is not recommended for old people and children.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary tour package offers guided day treks, night treks and day-long treks. These trekking trails traverse through diverse habitats including moist deciduous forests, evergreen grasslands and tribal community areas. The short treks last for nearly three hours and the day-long treks are from dawn to dusk. All treks are conducted by a travel guide and accompanied by armed forest guards. There are many other activities for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Bamboo rafting through the lake will offer you panoramic views of mist clad mountains followed by range hiking for about 10 km. Camping programme inside the national park are also available where you can stay in eco-friendly bamboo thatches and tree houses.
