Sajnekhali bird sanctuary spreads over a sprawling area of 362 square kilometers in the northern part of the Sunderbans delta. The Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is the only place situated between the Peechkali and Gomti rivers where tourists can go for a walk. This sanctuary is known for its rich bird population. The Sajnekhali Bird Century is home to the Heron, Hermit and many other species of birds adjoining the tiger reserve in the Sunderbans. Tourists can also visit the Mangrove Interpretation Center here. This place is known for its magnificent bird sanctuary.

The Sajnekhali Watch Tower is a major tourist destination of the Sunderbans and from here tourists can see the dense population of tigers. Apart from this, tourists can also see other wildlife of Sunderbans such as axis deer and crocodiles, etc. This tower attracts tourists. It is the only place where tourists are allowed to walk. The Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is located right next to the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve.

The Mangrove Interpretation Centre at the Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is a popular attraction there which is regarded as a part of Sunderbans. Also, at this sanctuary, tourists can recognize a few vivid types of Kingfisher, Plovers, Sandpipers, Whimbrels, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Lap-Wings and Curfews. Along with a breeding colony of herons, the bird sanctuary additionally houses a Visitor's Center where travelers can see an enclosure for the crocodiles and a shark lake alongside a turtle incubation facility. 

How to reach Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary

Sajnekhali is at a distance of about 130 km from the city of Kolkata. The nearest railway station from Sajnekhali is the Canning railway station. You can take a Ferry from Gosaba to reach the Sajnekhali bird sanctuary. Or you can also hire a motorboat for Basanti or Gadkhali.

Best time to visit Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary

Sajnekhali is a year-round destination while the best time to visit Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is during the winter season when the weather remains comfortable for the sightseeing tour. September to March is the ideal time for the tour. However, some people love to visit the bird sanctuary during the monsoon season.
