Legends and Mythologies
According to the legends, the demon named Tarkasur meditated and worshipped Lord Shiva here for the boon. Due to his immense devotion, Lord Shiva gave him a boon of immortality with a condition that only Lord Shiva’s son could kill him. With the thought that Lord Shiva follows Vairagya and will not marry ever, the Tarkasur started evil by killing the saints and the sages went to Lord Shiva to ask help. Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati and blessed with a son named Kartikeya.
Lord Kartikeya killed the demon Tarkasur but at the time of death, Tarkasur asks for a pardon from Lord Shiva. Then Mahadev attached his name with the Tarkasur and gave the name to that place where Tarkasur worshipped Lord Shiva as Tarkeshwar Mahadev. Lord Shiva idol is present there in the form of performing Tandav. Earlier there was a Shivling there but later on, the idol found at the same place. The temple also comprises an Ashram and Dharamshala in the premises. With the prior information, people can stay there and they also serve food.
