The National Art Gallery Chennai is considered as one of the most popular art galleries in India. It is also the major attraction for the tourists who visit this historic site. The art galleries in the region are classified into four sectors – the Decorative Art Gallery, Paintings of Ravi Varma, paintings of Thanjavur, and Indian Traditional Art Gallery. The painting division also includes paintings from various parts of India such as Thanjavur, Rajasthan, Deccan, and Kangra. There are also some of the miniature paintings explaining the battle scenes. The National Art Gallery Chennai also consists of some other displays like the ancient artifacts and spiritual sculptures that the tourists can explore. 

Tourists can also see the magnificent ancient handicrafts from the time of the 10th and 11th centuries at the National Art Gallery. You can also catch up with some of the scenes that are depicting in the paintings which are dated back from the 10th and 11th centuries. Additionally, there are several pictures of Lord Rama and Sita along with a variety of periodic books, and documents.

The National art gallery Chennai is in a building that is constructed in the colonial architecture of Indo-Saracenic style. The magnificent display of old-fashioned art makes the National Art Gallery a respected tourist attraction in Chennai. You can stroll around peacefully at your own leisure time and see the paintings on display. There are sculptures and metal statues. Touching or fiddling the paintings and other artifacts is strictly prohibited. Pets are not allowed inside the museum.

Location

The art gallery is located on Pantheon Road, in Egmore. Established in 1906 the art gallery is known as Victoria Memorial Hall and presently serves as a legendary museum in Chennai for all the art lovers. 

How to reach

The national museum is easily accessible from most of the city. The nearest railway station is the Chennai Central Railway Station which is located 2 km from the museum. One can catch a bus from the station and reach there in no time. Chennai Airport has situated 12 km from the museum and one can hire a taxi or cab from the airport.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit here is from October to March when the weather remains calm and pleasant. Try going in the morning to avoid the crowds. It takes 1 to 2 hours to explore this place and so morning hours are the ideal time.
