Jagdish Temple also known as Jagdish Mandir is a majestic and grand structure that stands in the City Palace Complex of the magnificent city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. This temple is dedicated to the preserver of the universe, Lord Vishnu. Jagdish Temple Udaipur is also known as Laxmi Narayan Temple and is reputed for being the most significant temple in the entire city of Udaipur.

Jagdish Temple History:

Jagdish Temple was built on a small terrace in Udaipur, and the construction was completed in the year 1651. Laxmi Narayan Temple( Jagdish Temple) is built by the Hindu architectural science of Vaastu Shastra. Even in those times, the Emperor spent INR 1.5 million to construct this massive temple.

Jagdish Temple Attraction:

The gateway to this grand temple can be seen from the Bara Pol of the City Palace. This temple houses attractive carvings, several interesting statues, and the serene atmosphere and these prominent things make this place of worship an ideal choice for those who seek solace and faith.

The main shrine consists of the prominent four-armed statue of the Lord Vishnu, which is carved from a single black stone. The main shrine of Lord Jagdish is centrally located, surrounded by four small shrines. These shrines are dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Sun God, Lord Ganesh, and Goddess Shakti respectively. The atmosphere inside the shrine is enveloped with utter calmness and serenity. The spiritual aura of the temple is an experience that you should not miss.

The Jagdish Mandir consists of three stories and is an architectural marvel that flaunts the attractively decorated ceilings, intricately carved pillars, and large airy halls. The structure is an excellent example of the Maha Meru or the Meru-Gurjara style of architecture. Jagdish Temple is one of the most stunning examples of Hindu iconography that you can find in India. The structure is constructed with the hand-carved stone. The spire of the main temple is about 79 feet in height and is ornamented with sculptures of dancers, horsemen, elephants, and musicians. The spire dominates the horizon of Udaipur and is indeed a sight to witness.

Jagdish Temple Structure:

The structure of the Jagdish Temple consists of a pyramidal spire on the top, a prayer hall known as the Mandap and a doorway. Both the 1st and 2nd floors of the temple each comprises of 50 intricately carved pillars.

An exquisite sight to notice at the Jagdish Temple Udaipur is the marble slab, which is placed at the starting point of the stairway to the main temple complex. Tourists, as well as locals, often form a queue, to rub their knees, shoulders or back against the slab of Marble. It is believed that this slab of marble possesses some magical ability to relieve any pain in the body as the person rubs against it.

The skyline of Udaipur is dominated by the 79 feet high spire or Shikhar of the main temple. The spire is adorned with several attractively designed sculptures of dancers, elephants, horsemen, and musicians that will hold your sight. As you approach the temple, two enormous stone elephants are placed at the entrance to welcome. One can also find near the stone slab with an inscription about Maharaja Jagat Singh in front of the temple. To reach the temple you have to climb the 32 steps made of marble.

The Temple opens in the morning at 4:15 AM to 1:00 PM and then in the evening from 5:15 PM to 8:00PM on Monday to Sunday.
