Nawab Saheb ki Haveli in Jaipur:
Located at the heart of the city, next door to Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar, is the famous Nawab Saheb ki Haveli. This ostentatious mansion until recently belonged to Triloki Das Khandelwal who died in recent times at the age of 87. The mansion is open to visitors to view the opulence of the Rajput era.
Near Tripolia and across the road from Jantar Mantar, the Nawab Saheb Ki Haveli draws crowds of tourists for a panoramic view of Jaipur from the rooftop of the building at a height of 50 meters. Triloki Das Khandelwal had the foresight to put up two mirrors at the extremities of the mansion. They can be turned by 90 degrees and ingeniously they give a complete view of the vistas of Jaipur city. One can see almost all the forts as well as all the archeological monuments from the top.
Nawab Sahab ki Haveli's History:
The Haveli which means mansion in English, was initially built during the reign of Sawai Jai Singh by his architect, Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya in 1772. He was in fact the architect of Jaipur city. Once the construction was over, the Raja installed Vidhyadhar himself in the mansion so that he could oversee the construction of the city.
The mansion was to remain in the family so long as there were heirs to run it. After 4 generations, the Haveli went into the possession of the royalty again. After a period when the mansion was not much in the limelight, Maharaja Ram Singh housed his Prime Minister, Nawab Faiz Ali Khan in the Haveli. After which it came to be known as Nawab Sahib ki Haveli. The Haveli was inherited by his son, Fayyaiz Ali Khan who became the next Nawab, and by his son and grandson.
The grandson tided over some difficult times by selling parts of the Haveli, a major chunk being acquired by Khandelwal who opened it out to tourists. The beautiful Haveli is a major attraction in Jaipur not only to get an insight on how the Rajput royalty lived but also to take breathtaking pictures of the Pink City from the roof top.
