Hawa Mahal History:
The city was built by the Rajput Raja with great scientific insight. The Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of the Sawai Jai Singh II. The Hawa Mahal is built of red and pink sandstone with a lining of white stone. It is a grand and majestic palace. The Rajput king was a devotee of Lord Krishna and wanted to build the Palace like Lord Krishna’s crown. He engaged a designer Lal Chand Ustad to build the palace.
Architecture of Hawa Mahal:
The palace was constructed as a five-story building each unique in its own way. The front façade is like a honeycomb. This palace has 953 small windows called Jharokhas. There are overhanging balconies and each window and balcony is supported with pillars having intricate latticework. The honeycomb windows allow airflow into and through the palace. Being a desert city, this flow of air keeps the palace cool and breezy. It is for this reason that the palace is called ‘Hawa Mahal’ or ‘Palace of Winds’.
The vivid Rajasthani architecture, designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the form of Lord Krishna’s crown, is a feast to the eyes. The Hawa Mahal was constructed for the royal women of the Rajput families because they could not go out and experience the windy weather in the desert. The women would sit at the windows and balconies and look out into the street below where the traders sold their wares and they could watch the bustling trade below.
