How to reach Meghalaya

Meghalaya is a lovely hill station that is visited by vacationers, peace lovers, and nature enthusiasts. Several means of transport allow travelers to travel to Meghalaya from all other cities in India and to enjoy its rich natural beauty. However, traveling from anywhere in the country is not a difficult task because it is well-linked with cities and towns via rail, air, and road. Here is a brief about how to reach Meghalaya by different modes of transport.

By Air By Air

The closest airport of Meghalaya is the Umroi Airport near Barapani which is around 35 km far away from Shillong. The Umroi Domestic Airport is not well-connected with major cities in India. So, another nearest airport in Meghalaya is the Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Guwahati that is only 128 km far away from Shillong. Various regular flight options are being offered by major carriers such as GoAir, AirAsia India, Jet Airways, Air India, etc, from Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Imphal, Silchar, Bagdogra, and Agartala and many more. Outside the airport, travelers can book a taxi or cab from Guwahati to Shillong. Also, Meghalaya state gives a helicopter service to tourists and it is quite convenient and affordable for them. The helicopter ride takes only 20 minutes to reach Shillong from Guwahati and this service is available on all days except Sunday.

By Road By Road

Many tourists opt to travel by bus because this transport mode is economical and convenient but although not always comfortable. The Meghalaya Transport Corporation and Assam State Transport Corporation offer several tourist buses like public, private, deluxe, semi-deluxe to people at regular intervals. People can select from air-conditioned, luxury, and sleeper and Volvo bus according to their convenience and budget. The total distance between Shillong and Guwahati is around 135 km and the journey takes 3 to 4 hours to reach Meghalaya via NH 40. Some people prefer to hire taxis or cabs which take them to their desired destination in Meghalaya. Even, Meghalaya Transport Corporation does not only provide great connectivity within the state but also with its neighboring states. The National Highway 40 (NH 40) is an inter-connecting highway between Guwahati and Shillong.

The nearest railway station from Meghalaya is Guwahati Railway Station. It is approximately 100 km far away from Shillong which is the capital of Meghalaya. The Guwahati Railway Junction is well-connected with all major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, etc. via its extensive rail network system. Premium Train like Rajdhani Express operates from New Delhi to Guwahati which takes about 34 hours to reach there.
