Best Time to Visit Ladakh

The best time to visit Leh Ladakh is from April to June. During these months, the climate of Leh Ladakh is pleasant while in winter, the roads are covered with snow but offer the most breathtaking views to travelers. Due to substantial snowfall in winter, the Manali-Leh Highway is not functional. On the other hand, the Srinagar-Leh Highway is operational but this highway also faces occasional landslides.

Summer Season (April to June):

Leh Ladakh is looking more beautiful during the summer season so that this season is considered as the best season to visit Leh Ladakh. Around the month of April, people start to migrate to Leh Ladakh to enjoy the remaining days of the spring season in the crisp weather, as the snow melts and cold fades gradually. However, April month is the best month to visit Leh Ladakh among tourists. During this period of time, the temperature hovers around 5 0C to 7 0C. Even, the spring season is the ideal season for the budget travelers and the hotels give lucrative discounts to the visitors. In this season, the travelers see a good share of snow and ice at the Chang La Pass and Khardung La Pass. During June month, the Manali route opens up along with Rohtang Pass and temperature hovers between 15 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. But sometimes, the roads can be slippery due to the rapidly melting snow.

Winter Season (October to March):

The months of September and October are more considers as the Autumn Season which is also considered as the ideal time to visit Leh Ladakh. You can get an opportunity to explore its picturesque and amazing locations. After the monsoon season, the level of the flowing waters diminishes too much and the weather conditions are dry with a beginning chill and occasional snowfall.

While November to February is considered as the winter season and during this time of the year the Leh Ladakh freezes with extreme cold. Most of the places of this region experience sub-zero temperatures and the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways get dangerous due to black ice. But the average temperature of this season can go as high as 2 0C and as low as -20 0C. Moreover, travelers who can bear this temperature visit Tso Moriri and Pangong Tso Lakes to watch its changing colors before the lakes get frozen. From the months of mid-January to March, the adventure lovers love to do trekking on the popular Chadar Trek. The winter season is an ideal season for the expedition of the wildlife sanctuaries of Leh Ladakh, especially spot the snow leopards. The Losar and Spituk Festivals are the popular festivals of the winter season. During the winter season, Leh Ladakh would be very pristine like a fairy tale snow land, thus, people visit this place for watching the scenic views of the surroundings.

Monsoon Season (July to September):

The monsoon season of Leh Ladakh witnesses irregular to heavy rainfall in most regions. So, this season is not the safest time to explore Leh Ladakh. The rainy season makes the roads very risky for travelers. During this time, snow slides and landslides are frequent as well as periodic road blockages can obstruct the flow of the trip or trek. The regions of Baralacha Pass and Zoji La Pass fall under the rain shadow that is going towards Leh from Manali and Srinagar respectively.
