Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo or the Trivandrum Zoo is located in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) of the Indian state of Kerala. It is considered to be one of the oldest zoos in India. Built-in 1857 by the Maharaja of Travancore, this zoo is one of the major tourist attractions of Kerala.

The Thiruvananthapuram zoo is spread on a sprawling 55 acres of land. Don't worry if you are not an avid walker, you will be provided with electric minivans to roam around in the zoo. The zoo was renovated in 1995 and now consists of huge enclosures in which the animals are kept. These enclosures emulate the natural surroundings of animals. There are a large number of animals in the Thiruvananthapuram zoo such as monkeys, tigers, Hippopotamus, rhinoceros, lions, wild buffaloes, bears, the Royal Bengal Tiger, elephants, snakes, birds and panthers in this zoo.

The Snake House is a must-visit place in the Thiruvananthapuram zoo park. When you enter the snake house you are bound to get scared, since the entrance of the snake house resembles the mouth of a snake. The unique thing about this snake house is that each cubicle houses a different variety of snake and is designed with care, taking into account the natural habitat of that particular variety of snake. This is made to make sure that the snakes feel at home.

When you exit the snake house you are greeted by various species of turtles, crocodiles and a Monitor Lizard. For plant lovers, there is a botanical garden within the zoo. Various exotic species of tropical plants and trees that are brought from all over the world look gracious in this garden. This zoo is home to 82 indigenous species of animals. The best time to visit the zoo in winter. During this time one can spot the species enjoying the sun and the probability of spotting the different species increases.
