Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a wetland area by the eastern banks of Vembanad Lake, is a vibrant hub of rare species of birds. The bird sanctuary is spread across an area of 14 acres and the entire place is an ornithologist's paradise. It is a favorite place for the different species of birds, including migratory birds from the Himalayas and even those from as far as Siberia. Alfred George Baker, an Englishman, laid the foundation of the bird sanctuary in Kumarakom and initially it was known as Baker's estate. Baker created the bird sanctuary inside a rubber estate amidst the backdrop of Vembanad Lake and Kavanar River. Now the bird sanctuary is managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The mangroves and coconut trees in this area are protected as they are the natural habitat of birds.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is situated in Kumarakom but it is also known as the Vembanad bird sanctuary as it is located on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom bird sanctuary has a nature walk route which will be very refreshing as you can spot many rare butterflies on the way. There are two watch towers inside the sanctuary and the view from the top of the watchtower is amazing. The bird sanctuary is filled with coconut groves, green paddy fields, and mangrove forests. A houseboat or motorboat cruise is the best way to sight the birds without disturbing them.
The best time to visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is during dawn or dusk. The best season to watch local birds is from June to August, as this is the breeding season of local birds. The commonly sighted local birds are waterfowl, cuckoo, Brahminy kite, owl, egret, heron and water duck. The ideal season to watch migratory birds is from November to February, which is the mating season for these birds. The migratory birds found here are Siberian cranes, darter, parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers and wood beetles.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary boating will take you through the beautiful backwaters as you cruise along the Kavanar river or Vembanad Lake.
