Mall road has a treat for the shopaholic and as there is no traffic inside the town, one can walk down the festive streets and shop at the handicraft shops, clothes boutiques, winter clothes shops and later have a piping hot cup of tea at one of the snack shops. Late evenings see the authentic local cuisines of Himachal opening up their dinner menus too.
One of the main attractions that Shimla is famous for is the heritage train journey from Kalka to Shimla. The wonderful scenery and experience of traveling through the hills and valley en route Shimla is something that you should not miss. Tickets for the trip need to be bought well in advance as the limited seats get filled up fast. There is a connecting train from Delhi to Kalka, the Kalka Shatabdi to commute from Delhi. The quaint old Shimla Railway station has been declared a UNESCO heritage site.
To get to Shimla one can choose either to fly in or come by road or train. There is a small airstrip at Jubbarhatti about 20 km from Shimla, the nearest airport and there is one daily flight of Alliance Air but it is not functional through the year. The other option would be to take the scenic road route into Shimla either from Delhi or from Chandigarh. The Chandigarh route is faster, you can reach in 3 to 4 hours whereas from Delhi it is a good 7 to 8 hours.
The best times to visit Shimla would be between March and June when the cool climate of Shimla would be a welcome change to the heat of the plains and in winter between October and February, the whole area turns into a fairytale scene of snow and fun.
