The closest town to the Gir National Park is Talala to the West from where one can take the jeep safaris. The Sasangir National Park was established in 1965 when the population of lions depleted to just a dozen or so due to hunting. By the efforts of the forest department and the 40 odd ‘Cat women of Gir forest’ also called Van Raksha Sahayaks, the population of lions has increased to more than 500. In fact around 180 Gir-bred lions now also populate zoos in the country and the world and are a protected species.
The vast expanse of the park is mainly made up of deciduous trees along with evergreen trees, shrubs and grassy areas in certain areas. Occasionally rocky terrain and dense areas with herb growth are seen. But the areas accessible by the safaris are restricted to the Gir Interpretation zone also called Devaliya Safari Park. Within this area, the wildlife is living in their natural habitat but fenced off from the main sanctuary with the double-entry gated system.
With the Sasangir forest tour, you will be able to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region make it a jewel of bio-diversity. With the Kamleshwar Dam supplying the much-needed water to the forests, it is the lifeline of the region. During the rainy seasons the watering holes that dot the area are well supplied but at times of drought, it is a major challenge for the forest department to sustain. There are more than 2300 species of fauna including 38 species of mammals, 37 reptiles, more than 500 species of birds and 2000 insect varieties. The forests are known to house more than 500 species of flora that attract migratory birds in season. By far the most enthralling activity in Sasangir tours is the open jeep safaris that give a spectacular experience with the lions of India’s jungles.
The Park is also inhabited by predators like leopards, striped hyenas and jackals, while rusty striped cats, langurs, porcupines, black-naped hares, wild asses, Indian gazelles, wild boar, spotted deer, nilgai and sambar deer are few of the other mammalian species that are often spotted. Rare sightings of tortoises, Pangolin and Chousingha- the world’s only 4-horned antelopes make for bonus attractions in the region. Indian Cobras, Pythons and Mugger Crocodiles are some of the reptiles visible in the marshy lands of the Park.
Sasangir forest packages are arranged between October 15th and June 15th when the Park is open. Best times to spot wildlife, however, are in the hot months of April and May when the predators and herbivores alike come down to the watering holes for water. Open jeep safaris are arranged as part of Sasangir forest Tours with special forest department permits for entry. Entry is closed on Wednesdays. On all other days, there are 3 safari trips. The first trip starts at 6.45 am till 9.45 am. Later from 8.30 am to 11.30 am and in the afternoon from 3 pm to 6 pm there are two more Sasangir forest tours by open jeeps. Private vehicles are rarely permitted. Booking for the jeep safari can be made at the hotels where our tours are booked or online.
Best travel routes to Sasangir would be from Mumbai to Diu airport which is 2 hours by road from Gir. Alternative airports are Keshod or Rajkot which involve longer road travels. Ahmedabad International airport which is well connected is an 8-hour drive.
