With the Dwarka pilgrimage tour, you will learn about the historical significance of this holy city. After Sri Krishna’s victory over his Uncle Kansa and the cruel Jarasandh was following Sri Krishna and his people, it is said in the Mahabharata that Sri Krishna built a beautiful city in Dwarka by reclaiming land from the sea and he made it his capital to save his people. Their civilisation flourished and it was a great port of trade. There is evidence of such a city and the port trade with countries as far away as Bahrain dating to more than 8000 years. The name Dwarka means Gateway of salvation; the city is also called Dwarkamati, Mokshapuri or Dwarkavati. In the Mahabharata itself, it was said that before Sri Krishna left the Earth he told Arjuna to evacuate citizens from the city as it would soon be submerged in the sea. There is also evidence that the sea level rose and sunk the grand city. The Dwarakadeesh Temple was built in the current city of Dwarka dedicated to Sri Krishna. Although there is evidence to say that it was constructed more than 2500 years ago, the temple in its present form was built in the 16th Century after being destroyed by the Mahmud Begada rulers. During the Dwarka holiday package, you will get an opportunity to visit the renowned temple and seeks blessings from Lord Krishna.
Dwarka is the seat of the Sharadha Peeta in the West established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 16th Century and also ISKCON movement. It is considered to be one of the Char Dhams or pilgrimage places that all Hindus visit in their lifetime. Other temples that form part of the Dwaraka Pilgrimage package are Rukmini Devi Temple, The Gomti Ghat on the banks of the River Rukmini, Bet Dwaraka an island on the Arabian Sea with a set of temples and the Lighthouse at the land’s end. There is a bridge connecting Bet Dwaraka to Okha on the mainland. Today the main income of Dwarka is tourism due to the vast pilgrimage population.
Dwarakadeesh Temple in the holy city is called Jagat Mandir as it was built by Raja Jagat Singh Rathore. This beautiful 5 story edifice is 78 m tall and has a magnificent flag fluttering in the sea breeze. The 52-yard long flag is ceremoniously changed 5 times a day by Guggali Brahmins who climb the Shikkara to loud cheers after it is carried to the temple by whichever family is sponsoring it for the day; a daily routine well worth watching.
The Gomti River flows into the Arabian Sea in this city and the Gomti Ghat allows pilgrims to take a holy dip in the river before visiting the sacred shrine. Temples to Samudra Devi the River Goddess Gomathi, Saraswathi and Lakshmi dot the Ghat area. Across the bridge known as Sudama Sethu, at Bet Dwarka, a number of temples dedicated to various deities are visited in the Dwaraka Pilgrim Trip. This includes the famous Hanuman Dandi Temple where he is seen with his son Makardhwaja born of his sweat and a crocodile. The Nageshwar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas visited by pilgrims. One of the temples that pilgrims definitely visit is the Rukmini Devi temple. Rukmini Devi was the chief of Lord Krishna’s wives and this beautifully carved temple dating to the 12th Century is around 2 km from Dwarkadeesh. The Thulabaara is famous in the temple.
Dwarka has plenty for the divinity inspired visitor and there are plenty of souvenirs to take back apart from a wonderful Darshan and Sri Krishna’s blessings.
