History of Bandhavgarh National Park

The Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, was the locus of the local rulers until they shifted their capital to Rewat in 1617 A.D. Consequently, Bandhavgarh became a deserted forest region, eventually becoming a royal hunting reserve. The Maharajas killed 100s of tigers as it was considered auspicious.

It was not until post-independence that the destruction of the forests deeply moved Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa. On his proposal, an area of 105 sq km was first declared a National Park in 1968. Henceforth, poaching and grazing were brought under control, and thus, the wildlife population, including tigers, dramatically increased. The park was included in Project Tiger in 1993.
