Lotus Temple New Delhi, built with the white marble and it is in the shape of a half-opened lotus. The lotus has 27 blooming petals, made of three layers of nine petals. The first two layers have an inward curve that appears to cover the inner dome. The third layer is curved outward creating a cover over the nine entrances. All nine entrances are surrounded by gardens and ponds. It has nine doors opening into a central hall which can accommodate 2,500 people at a time. The central hall is the main place of worship. As the lotus flower is half-open it makes way for the natural light to enter the temple. The Lotus Mandir itself appears like a lotus flower floating on water.
The marble used in constructing the Lotus Temple was brought from Mount Pentelicus in Greece. It is said that all prominent Baha’i houses of worship are built with this same type of marble. Baha’i temple emphasizes light and water as they are the most prominent elements. Lotus flower is a symbol of purity and oneness and also symbolizes life preservation and procreation.
