Lotus Temple is also known as Kamal Mandir, attracts tourists from all over the world for its breathtaking architecture. It is made up of white marble in the shape of a lotus flower. Lotus temple is a Baha’i house of worship and it is open to all religions. The purpose of Baha’i faith is to unite all races and people in one common faith. Lotus Temple (Kamal Mandir) Delhi was built in 1986 and soon became popular for its structural beauty and symbolism of oneness. The lush green landscape surrounding the temple adds to the beauty of the structure. This magnificent structure was built by Iranian architect Fariborz Sabha. It took ten years to construct the Lotus Temple and along with the team of 800 members including engineers, technicians, artisans, and workers took part in the construction.

Lotus Temple New Delhi, built with the white marble and it is in the shape of a half-opened lotus. The lotus has 27 blooming petals, made of three layers of nine petals. The first two layers have an inward curve that appears to cover the inner dome. The third layer is curved outward creating a cover over the nine entrances. All nine entrances are surrounded by gardens and ponds. It has nine doors opening into a central hall which can accommodate 2,500 people at a time. The central hall is the main place of worship. As the lotus flower is half-open it makes way for the natural light to enter the temple. The Lotus Mandir itself appears like a lotus flower floating on water.

The marble used in constructing the Lotus Temple was brought from Mount Pentelicus in Greece. It is said that all prominent Baha’i houses of worship are built with this same type of marble. Baha’i temple emphasizes light and water as they are the most prominent elements. Lotus flower is a symbol of purity and oneness and also symbolizes life preservation and procreation. It believes in the concept of oneness of mankind, religion and one God. The lotus flower is connected with various other religions of the world and it also represents oneness and harmony. Inside the temple, no pictures or statues are representing any religion or any form of worship. Moreover, no lectures, sermons or spiritual meetings are allowed inside the temple. The Lotus temple is a non-religion oriented temple.

Lotus Temple has won several awards and recognitions for its architectural style. It has been recognized and appreciated throughout the world.
