India is a country where peace and harmony are mixed with its culture but at the same time, Indians are brave hearted and know how to fight against the evils. India has never initiated any war but battled several times against those who wanted to harm humanity and peace. There are a number of war memorials in India built in the honor of the martyrs who laid their lives to protect humanity and civilization. One such war memorial is the India Gate that is regarded as one of the largest war memorials in India. 

India Gate was built to commemorate 70,000 soldiers of the British India Army who took part in the First World War. The 42-meter tall arch-shaped gate was designed by Edwin Lutyensthat looks like the Arch de Triomphe in Paris, France. The memorial also holds the names of 13,516 soldiers killed in the Afghan war of 1919. India Gate Delhi was built by the Imperial War Graves Commission. This Commission was founded in the year 1917 to build war graves and memorials to honor the martyrs of the First World War.

India Gate New Delhi was initially known as the ‘All India War Memorial’ when it was inaugurated in the year 1926. In 1972, a black marble structure was built under the gate to honor the martyrs of the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The structure has a continuously burning flame which is known as “Amar Jawan Jyoti”. Every year on Independence Day, the prime minister of India pay tribute here before hoisting the tricolor.

India Gate is a famous tourist  attraction site in Delhi, India. The best time to visit the India Gate is during the evening when the gate is illuminated with light and the fountains create a lovely view. You can also enjoy some street food as the vendors stand in line with their food items in the evening. India gate is located at the edge of Rajpath in New Delhi and is surrounded by green lawns where people can enjoy a picnic. If you visit Delhi in January then you can attend the grand Republic Day parade which passing through the India Gate.

In 2019 the Government of India constructed National War Memorial near the India Gate that includes a war museum. The War Museum is a must-visit for those who want to know about India Gate and the heroic stories of the Indian soldiers.
